A U.S. Navy F/A-18F Super Hornet assigned to Strike Fighter Squadron 211 crashed this morning shortly after launching from the aircraft carrier Theodore Roosevelt in the Arabian Gulf, according to a Navy news release.
Both crew members aboard the jet ejected and were quickly recovered by search and rescue personnel, the release said. Initial reports indicate both are conscious and alert, and without serious injury. The squadron is based at Oceana Naval Air Station in Virginia Beach.
The crash, which occurred at 9:30 a.m. Eastern time, wasn’t the result of hostile activity, according to the release.
The Roosevelt left Norfolk in March, and will head to San Diego, its new homeport, after the deployment ends.
