SAN DIEGO – Vice Adm. Kenneth Floyd will take over as commander of the U.S. Third Fleet Monday during a change-of-command ceremony aboard the aircraft carrier USS Ronald Reagan in San Diego Bay. Floyd will assume command from Vice Adm. Gerald Beaman, who is retiring after a 35-year Navy career. The ceremony will include a gunfire salute. Most recently, Floyd was assistant deputy chief of naval operations for warfare systems at the Pentagon.
The former fighter pilot and veteran of operations Desert Storm and Enduring Freedom also has commanded Air Wing 7, was executive officer of the aircraft carrier USS Constellation, and served as an aide to the head of the Naval Space Command. Beaman is a former fighter pilot who flew missions in the Persian Gulf and commanded the Navy detachment of the Fighter Weapons School — known as Top Gun — in Saudi Arabia during Desert Storm. The Third Fleet, which was formed in World War II, conducts operations in the eastern and northern Pacific.
