About 30 Marine Corps aircraft involved in a training exercise in California are suspending flight operations for 24 hours following Tuesday’s crash of a Marine F/A-18C Hornet.
The pilot with Marine Fighter Attack Squadron 251 safely ejected after the Hornet crashed Tuesday evening at Twentynine Palms Strategic Expeditionary Landing Field in California, according to a news release from the 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing. The cause of the crash is under investigation.
Aircraft from Marine Corps Air Station, Cherry Point, North Carolina, and Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort, South Carolina, are currently taking part in an exercise at Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center Twentynine Palms, said wing spokesman 1st Lt. John Roberts. Those aircraft include AV-8B Harriers, MV-22B Ospreys and KC-130s as well as Huey and Cobra helicopters.
Right now, the pause in flight operations applies only to aircraft involved with the exercise, not the entire wing, Roberts said.
